Tooth Extraction in Warren, NJ

Tooth Extraction At The Warren Smile Center in New Jersey

Restoration and the healthy conservation of natural teeth are the primary goals of dentistry. Advanced decay or a severely damaged tooth, however, may cause a tooth’s condition to be beyond restorative dentistry. Although the tooth itself is irreparable, treatment will still be necessary. A damaged tooth may be sensitive, impede eating and speech, or be cosmetically unappealing. In addition to being extremely painful, severe tooth decay may spread to adjacent teeth if left untreated. At the Warren Smile Center, Dr. Susanna Kayserman and Dr. Mark Stein offer tooth extraction to preserve the health and appearance of their patients’ smile.

How can tooth extraction help me?

Tooth extraction may be the best form of dental treatment in several circumstances. Although tooth preservation procedures, such as fillings or root canals, are often recommended treatments, in some cases, such procedures may not benefit the patient or may be inappropriate to the situation, such as when considering the extraction of a baby tooth. Below is a chart of possible reasons you may need to have a tooth extracted.

Reasons To Have a Tooth Extracted
Baby teeth may not fall out in time for permanent teeth
Crowding
Preparing for braces
Severely damaged, infected, or decayed teeth
Extra teeth

What to expect before tooth extraction?

Once Dr. Kayserman or Dr. Stein has determined your course of treatment, x-rays will be taken to plan the method of tooth removal. An x-ray will help to guide your dentist during the extraction. The method of extraction varies on an individual basis and is determined by the position of the tooth. Dr. Kayserman and Dr. Stein will either perform a simple extraction or a surgical extraction.

If the crown of the tooth is flush against the gum line or beneath the gum line, Dr. Mark Stein will likely need to perform a surgical extraction. Patients will receive IV sedation. A small incision is required to remove the tooth, and stitches may be used to close the remaining pocket. Although surgical extraction is slightly more invasive than simple extraction, both are relatively common procedures that involve only a few days recovery. Below you will find a chart which highlights the differences between the two methods of tooth extraction performed at the Warren Smile Center.

What can I expect after tooth extraction?

Patients can expect to eat liquids and soft foods following tooth extraction. Brushing and flossing is permitted, but patients should clean the treatment area gently. Bleeding should stop after the first 24 hours. Surgical extractions usually take a few days longer to heal than simple extractions, but in either case, patients should expect to rest after their procedure. Below is a list of what to keep in mind following your tooth extraction.

What To Expect After Tooth Extraction
Rinse your mouth with salt water regularly after 24 hours
Avoiding rubbing the treatment area with your tongue
Lay propped up with pillows to help stop bleeding
Bite gently on gauze and change gauze pads regularly
Eats soft food, such as soup, Jell-O, or pudding

Depending on the location of the treatment area, a dental bridge or dental implant may be recommended to replace the extracted tooth. The method of tooth replacement varies on an individual basis, depending on the most feasible option and the patient’s preference. Dr. Kayserman and Dr. Stein will discuss each patient’s extraction and tooth replacement options during their initial consultation.
