Treatment of Periodontal Disease At The Warren Smile Center in New Jersey

Brushing and flossing should be part of your everyday routine to rid the mouth of food particles, freshen breath, and prevent cavities, but oral hygiene plays an integral role in not only the cleanliness of teeth but also in the prevention of gum disease, and consequently, your continued overall health. Should patients stop brushing and flossing regularly or properly, they may develop periodontal disease. Although periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, the health of the gums has been found to directly affect the health of the heart. Patients who develop gum disease actually put themselves at risk for heart disease and other serious health concerns, such as Diabetes.  Dr. Kayserman provides periodontal therapy at the Warren Smile Center to help reverse gum disease and prevent the health concerns associated with this condition.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an oral bacterial infection in the gums, bones, and periodontal ligaments. Early signs of developing periodontal disease include bleeding gums while brushing and flossing. Brushing and flossing on a daily basis will reverse this early stage within a few days of dedicated dental care. As periodontal disease worsens, however, more extreme symptoms will develop which require more invasive treatments to repair. Below is a chart of symptoms; if you have one or more of these symptoms, you may need to consult with your dentist to determine whether you have periodontal disease.

Symptoms Of Periodontal Disease
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Gums that bleed during brushing and flossing
Loose or mobile teeth
Receding gums
Bad breath or chronic bad taste
Pain while chewing
Sensitivity to hot and cold
Changes in bite
Tartar build up

How can Dr. Kayserman treat advanced stages of periodontal disease?

Advanced stages of periodontal disease can be treated with deep scaling and root planning, laser pocket reduction, when necessary placement of a chemotherapeutic agent such as Arestin, or a combination of both. Deep scaling and root planning will remove microbial plaque and calculus, or hardened dental plaque. Laser pocket reduction will treat the gaping space between the gum and the tooth. For a more in depth understanding of these two periodontal treatments, you may read their individual procedure pages—  deep scaling and root planning; laser pocket reduction— or speak to the Warren Smile Center’s friendly staff by contacting our New Jersey office at 908.753.0003.

How is periodontal disease connected to heart disease?

Maintaining the health of your gums is imperative to maintaining heart health as well as oral health. Studies have shown that people who develop gum disease are twice as likely to develop coronary disease because gum disease is an oral bacteria that will enter the blood stream in advanced stages. Once the disease enters the blood stream, it will attach to fatty deposits in the arteries and contribute to clot formation. This will constrict the normal flow of blood and restrict the amount of oxygen and nutrients required for the heart to function properly, eventually leading to heart attacks.

Other significant health problems are also directly linked to periodontal disease. These conditions are highlighted in the below chart:

Health Conditions Associated with Periodontal Disease
Heart Disease
Respiratory Disease
Diabetes
Osteoporosis
Premature and underweight births
