Stop Cavities with Composite Fillings in Warren, NJ

Composite Fillings At The Warren Smile Center in New

Despite your efforts to maintain a healthy and clean mouth, plaque may cling to enamel, causing tooth decay. Cavities that develop can be painful as tooth decay deepens, and daily activities, such as eating, drinking, and speaking, can be hindered. As time passes without dental treatment, the cavity will worsen, decaying more of your tooth and requiring more invasive dental treatment. Cavities discovered in their beginning stages, however, can avoid treatments such as onlays or crowns and simply be treated with fillings. At the Warren Smile Center, Dr. Kayserman offers composite fillings, so patients can return to their daily routine and diet pain-free without compromising the beauty of their smile.

What is a composite filling?

Composite fillings are the healthiest, most natural-looking filling available. Patients can expect Dr. Kayserman to clean the tooth, prepare the treatment area, and apply the composite filling in only one in-office appointment. Once the surface of the tooth is prepared, a shade of composite is chosen to perfectly match the shade of your natural tooth. The composite is then applied to the treatment area and hardened with a curing light. Once the composite is set, Dr. Kayserman will trim and polish the filling, so it blends with the surrounding tooth. Your bite is checked to ensure the filling doesn’t interfere with the alignment of your teeth, and patients may drive themselves home following the appointment.

Composite fillings provide many cosmetic and medical advantages over traditional amalgam fillings. The chart below highlights the differences between these two methods of cavity treatment:

Composite Fillings Amalgam Fillings
Healthier for the body Contains low levels of mercury
Matches your natural tooth color Produces an obvious, silver patch on teeth
Able to create a smaller filling Some patients may be allergic to the metal alloy
More of your natural tooth is conserved Weakens the strength of teeth over time
Less thermal expansion, which creates fewer crack lines May expand and contract slightly with temperature changes

Can I replace my amalgam fillings with composite fillings?

Many patients replace their amalgam fillings with composite fillings for either cosmetic or medical reasons. If you’ve had any problems with your amalgam filling, such as sensitivity to cold, pain, or allergenic reaction, or the cavity has continued to decay around the filling, replacing your filling would be considered medical. Otherwise, replacing your filling with composite would simply improve the cosmetic appearance of your smile. Amalgam fillings are extremely noticeable when a person speaks or laughs. Over time, the filling may even cause the surrounding tooth to appear gray. Replacing your amalgam fillings is a procedure similar to simply receiving a composite filling.

Replacing Your Amalgam Filling With Composite
The old amalgam filling is removed from the tooth.
An area of retention is created, so the composite has a surface to adhere to.
The area is etched, desensitized, and the composite is bonded layer over layer in the treatment area.
The filling is trimmed, so it feels smooth to the tongue.
